CNN’s Rye: Statues of Washington, Jefferson, and Robert E. Lee ‘All Need to Come Down’

On Thursday’s broadcast of CNN’s “At This Hour,” CNN Political Commentator Angela Rye argued that statues of slave owners, whether they’re of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, or Robert E. Lee should come down. CNN Political Analyst and Daily Beast Editor-in-Chief John Avlon who had referred to comparisons between Washington and Robert E. Lee as “idiotic” and stated that Confederates tried to claim Washington. Avlon also argued that there is no comparison between the Confederacy and Washington because Washington tried to unite the country and the Confederacy tore it apart. Later on, Rye said, “I think that we have to get to the heart of the problem here, and the heart of the problem is the way in which many of us were taught American history. American history is not all glorious. And even though I love John to death, I couldn’t disagree more about George Washington. George Washington was a slave owner. Steve Cohen (D-TN) said President Donald Trump should be impeached because he “can’t discern the difference between a domestic terrorist and a protester.” Cohen said, “Well, there has been a thought in the Democratic caucus that the president will hang himself. And he’s certainly doing a real good job of it, and that we should let him do that. I have been tempted to introduce an impeachment resolution. … I will be introducing my own impeachment resolution.” He added, “What happened in Charlottesville showed that the president can’t discern the difference between a domestic terrorist and a protester. He can’t distinguish between citizens, Americans who are objecting to abhorrent behavior of Klansmen and Nazis and Nazis and Nazis and Klansmen. That demonstration in Charlottesville reminded me of Kristallnacht in 1938 in Germany. It reminded me of Klan rallies with the torches. Attacker drives van swerving into crowd in Barcelona; at least 13 dead, 1 arrest

A white van jumped up onto a sidewalk and sped down a pedestrian zone in Barcelona's historic Las Ramblas district Thursday, swerving from side to side as it plowed into tourists and residents.
